DBSJournal App

The focus of this page is on how to use the Progressive Web App version of the DBSJournal. This app is provided by Restoration Fellowship Network to be freely used by anyone. We encourage you to share it with others. Additionally, it is recommended to use this app in conjunction with the reading plan app found here (follow the same Getting Started instructions to add the reading plan app).

Creating an Account and Logging In

Once you move past the landing page, you will be asked to create an account in Replit, which is the app host and database provider. Creating a login helps you in several ways: you can log out when you want to keep your Journal private, but mainly it serves to enable the backup and sync between devices. What you change on one device will be changed on another device if you have the app on multiple devices. Your email and password are not accessible to anyone, including the app developers.

Basic Layout

Starting at the bottom of the navigation menu:

LOGOUT

is necessary if you wish to protect the information in your Journal, which can be sensitive at times. It is also useful if more than one person is trying to access their journal on the same device.

HELP
is the page you are on now which describes how to use the web app version of the Disciples Bible Study Journal. More information about using the Journal can be found on this website. Some troubleshooting will also be found on this page.

SETTINGS is where you select your default translation for reading the Focus Section and Memory Verse; select font and size; select either custom colors or the default dark mode; give permission for backup and cloud sync, and select how frequently you want encouraging popups to appear on the Home Page,

JOURNAL is where you work on a Memory Verse and answer discovery questions as you dig into a small Focus Section of 1 verse to 1 chapter in length. You must not stop with exploring Scripture, you need to take the step of applying your study in concrete actions and focus your prayers to invite God to help you accomplish those specific actions in your life.

HOME is where you create a new Journal entry and access past entries. On each Journal Card are key elements for review weeks or even months after you have completed the actual Journal entry. Here is the Memory Verse with a slider for monitoring progress, Putting It Into Practice (from the last application field) and the Prayer Focus. These come directly from those fields on the Journal entry form. From here you can also Save as PDF, or delete selected Journal entries or Journal Cards.

FAQ

How can I fix app loading problems?

This seems to occur when there is either weak/intermittent internet, or, more commonly, when an app update is made. Usually the update loading problems can be resolved by 1) clearing the cache in the browser, 2) add web address in the browser and send it to your Home Screen again, 3) delete the Home Screen bookmark that wasn’t opening.

Is there a recommended browser?

The app is optimized for iPhone using Safari as its browser. Other device/browser combinations should work but occasionally some problems appear that are unique to the device/browser used. If using an iPhone and/or iPad, consider using Safari.

How many Journal Entries can I keep in the app?

The capacity is unlimited, but other considerations suggest it is better to limit the actual number of Journal Entries active in the system. Of course device factors play a role such as the speed and available memory. Load testing indicate most devices will function well up to around 100 Journal Entries. After that we would have to restructure the app to only load a limited number of Journal Entries. This would impact the Search function as it will only search actively loaded Journal Entries. It is recommended to not exceed approximately 104 Journal Entries (2 years of weekly journaling). You can batch save Journal Entries by grouping them by month, quarter, year, etc. Then you can delete the newly saved Journal Entries to keep your total active number under 104.
